Amazon.com takes over GoodReads

Post by BassGuitarGirl on Fri Mar 29, 2013 9:29 am

Wow. Apparently Amazon.com wants an even bigger slice of pie.
They have taken over GoodReads.
The reporter called it a marriage. Hmm, was there a shotgun involved?

Yeah I heard about this, and my only thought was, now they'll block Lesfic even more. FFS.

I hope that won't be the case. But Amazon does sell lesbian fiction, right? I have already got some of my books there...

I lament that it means Goodreads will no longer be an independent place to post reviews. I suppose some aren't objective, but at least they didn't link directly to rankings and positioning. I'm bummed.

Goodreads never took down a bad review as long as it did not flame the author, but instead picked on the book that they paid money for. We all know that Amazon will remove all less than 4 star reviews.

Well is you search lesbian books on their site, you get all the porno stuff that's really directed at men. Unless you know the author you want, it's unlikely they'll come up on first search unless it's Radclyffe or Kallmaker. Try to search an unknown book or author and it's another story entirely.

A couple years back they got in trouble for blocking searches of any Lesfic books.

I happened to bookmark the lesbian best sellers on amazon once. Good thing, because I have no idea how I got to it and can't get there again (like on another computer). If you choose Best Sellers, you can get Gay & Lesbian, but beyond that it's genre and it's all gay male books.

A search of "lesbian fiction" brings Sarah Diemer and Andi Marquette as the top two finds. Hardly porn. I wouldn't say "lesbian books" gets all porn, but there is a lot of erotica in the top results.

And it wasn't just lesfic they blocked, it was all LGBT books. I forget the details since I didn't understand it at the time. They claimed it was a "glitch." I only recently broke down and bought something from them. (Kind of forgot I was supposed to be boycotting them.)

Since when does amazon removed less than four-star reviews?

All reviews under 4 stars are reviewed by staff at Amazon, if they deem the comments too harsh or bad for sales, they are taken down. That's Amazon's policy.
