Happy St. Pat's day.

What is everyone else up to today on this festive day?

Usually, wifey and I meet up with the softball team, but I think we're gonna stay home and have a quiet day today.

There's a local bar/restaurant in town, I'm taking the wife so she can indulge in corned beef and cabbage. I hate the stuff myself, but what the hell.

Happy St. Patrick's Day Everyone.

We don't really celebrate it here but wifey and I went to a pub and watched a football/soccer game. Can't get more Irish than that. :alien: :alien: :alien:

I have different side of story. Wifey dragged me to city center for Open Sunday (Sunday when all the stores are open), then we went trough all the shops and bookstores and then we went to pub and watched football.

Happy St. Patrick's Day.

Since I haven't got a lick of Irish in my, I never think to do anything special. So it's a usual Sunday. In Boston, however, they are having the famous parade, to which I'm not invited, not because I'm not Irish. It's the parade of homophobes.

That's pretty Irish! There were a lot of Irish immigrants to this country, so I think that's why we (as a country) celebrate the holiday. We always say that everyone is Irish on St. Patty's Day!

In New York (where I used to live) the Columbus Day parade is huge! Folks of Italian heritage come out of the woodwork! On the flip side, many Native Americans protest the celebration, so it's a mixed bag.

Oops. Sorry, I got serious. Who needs a green beer?

Oh, years ago there was a kerfuffle over a gay group wanting to march. They were banned. The group sued (it's a public event) and the Supremes said it was OK to keep the gays out because it was free speech--the organizers have the right to exclude whomever they want. Seriously. Also Veterans for Peace has been banned and to this day, there's an alternative parade afterwards. Oh, the official St. Paddy's parade is a tribute to the military.

I never knew that, Elaine.

BassGirl, I am sure you know more about your own culture that I do, but I think St.Patrick's day is not equally celebrated all over the US. I thought the popularity is much higher on East Coast?

As for the rest of the world. I actually think the St.Patrick's day is just a good excuse to get drunk and listen to good music. Until now, I don't think I ever missed a good St. Patrick's Day concert and at least couple of beers.

Why do you think we celebrate the day.
