Thoughts on Social Media

Post by Deej on Tue Mar 25, 2014 11:18 am

Ladies, we're all members of various forums, or groups. We all have FB accounts, Twitter, some have Google plus, or I can't even remember all the others. So here's my question, is that how you choose what books to buy? Does an author making themselves available on social media influence your decisions? Do you use social media to learn or new authors?

Thanks in advance. OK

While the promo porn on all social media gets to be a bit much, if it's handled well, yes, I do find myself curious about new authors (Sandra Moran and Ann McMan are two who come to mind). I haven't read anything by either, and, unfortunately, my to-read shelf is full, but I might try one or the other. But I also tend to look at certain publishers and see who they've signed on. (But that might be self-interest since I'm now flogging a book.)

I don't use my Twitter account (and can't understand why I continue to collect followers). I've heard Tumblr is supposed to be good for writers, but haven't figured it out at all. Facebook is a depressing time sink. I still look to reviewers, like Lynne Pierce.

I don't know anything about Tumblr, although I've certainly heard of it. How is it different from Twitter? Is there any point to being on Twitter if you don't have a Smart Phone? I do think there must be a lot of writers on Tumblr, because my blog got a big surge of hits coming through Tumbler when I posted the guidelines for my next anthology.

I think Tumblr is a mix of blog and Twitter. And somewhere I read it was a good place for writers to be, but I haven't taken the time to figure out how. My problem is I don't have enough to say to be worth bothering with any of these.

And that's how I feel. I don't blog unless it's an event and then it's really a schedule I'm posting, I hate those little blurbs about where someone is, what they doing and why? Really?

So I'm not sure of the value of any of these? Thanks for your input ladies.

Mostly I hear from new books from you guys when I look at the Reading list.

I also often read about it on the Academy of Bards.

I joined a Book club on Goodreads (F/F Romance) and decided to let that group pick what I read. So far so good. The discussions about the book haven't been that deep or insightful...but whatever. I've enjoyed a few books I probably would never have found before. "I Can't Think Straight" by Shamim Sarif (then watched the movie) and "The Gravity Between Us" by Kristen Zimmer.
