Just today the CeBIT 2013 in Hannover, Germany ended. It is the biggest fair regarding IT and it usually shows what the trends will be in the future and what we user can look forward to. Smile

Shareconony (Share and Economy)
This is a new form of collaboration and means the sharing and the collective use of knowledge, experience and ressources usually in a cloud. We have SaaS (Software as a Service), PaaS (Platform as a Service) und IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service).
Sounds like an interesting concept. Especially SaaS is a good idea. If you need a certain program you can borrow it as long as you want without the costs of actually buying it.

What I have a bit of a problem with is the usage of a cloud. Of course it makes it a lot easier and cheaper when you don't have to worry about computer and software ressources but one must always remember that the infrastructure comes from a server somewhere. And all the data/information you put in will be stored on a hardware you don't have access too. And this serverfarms are not always in the U.S. or Europe. Some are also India and China.

M2M (machine to machine)
Not only smartphones and computer are able to communicate over the internet but also washing machines, refrigerators and cars will be able to use the World Wide Web. Those devices get an own IP address so they can be reachable. M2M is not completely new but it will become more and more common.

There were a lot more topics like mobile security (how can you protect your userdata with special apps) or social business such as using facebook and twitter as a plattform for your company. It will be interesting to see how these trends will evolve.

Athena, I'm the first to tell you I don't understand a lot of this, but I do have a question...why would refrigerators need to talk to each other???

No, not talk to each other, but monitor performance, provide service reminders, send error codes, etc. That is, if I understand it correctly.

I'm not a fan of this. While it can't tell what food is in your fridge (yet), it could possibly tell how many times the door is opened. And, as more and more RFIDs are added to stuff, it could indeed report what you put in there (if it is in original container) and how often.

hmm, ok I just send a reply but I have no idea where it went... :lol!:
Guess I have to start again.

There are some really nice examples. The fridge could check it's contents and send a shopping list to your smartphone. It would look something like this:

Or you could create a shopping list yourself and send the information to the fridge. It would then check if all the items are available.

Another usage could be that it checks whether some products have reached their date of expiry

And then some hacker will write a code that will tell your fridge to shut off and melt everything. I don't want machines smarter than me. And believe me, that won't take much.

I think we will soon lose contact with reality. And these kind of inventions only make us stupid. What's wrong with old fashion going to shopping and forgeting why you went. I disagree with lot of new technique, although we all use it. Next thing you know, our kids will be marrying over internt, living on two different continents, having virtual sex trough simulation machines, ordering babies from Amazon and washing the clothes over their smartphones. Doesn't that scares anyone?

Oh yes, that happened often enough. :lol!:

It is kind of scary though to see how fast technology changes nowadays.

Really. I got on the World Wide Web for the first time in 1995. It was clunky and slow, and if you didn't know the address of the site you wanted, you had no way to find it. Now Google is a verb.

Ray Kurzweil believes we will one day be able to upload our consciousness into the cloud. We'll achieve immortality. And that machines will achieve consciousness. Think Data from Star Trek.

http://discovermagazine.com/2012/nov/04-how-infinite-in-faculty#.UTyDOTd1-Ck

After reading that piece, I got an idea for a sci/fi story. A future where the last remaining humans are in zoos and robots are the successors to civilization. They have forgotten that they evolved from these primates in the zoo, which are no longer taught language so can't communicate. But they are human. Creepy. Stuff of nightmares.

This is where you can check all the functions of the new google glasses http://www.google.com/glass/start/what-it-does/

Couple of weeks ago I read a article about this in newspapers apparently google was looking for testers who could get those glasses on certain amount of time for the price of 1.500 US dollars.

I don't think I'd want to be wearing those while holding a cup of hot coffee. I can see some advantages, though. I've always wanted to be able to look at something and take a picture immediately if I wanted to. I don't have a camera phone, so that's still a dream.

Yeah, everything has it's advantages but also down sides. Camera phones are not so expensive anymore. You can get some quality phones with cameras for as low as 70 dollars. I plan to open a thread for smartphones and mobiles, I will post some nice reviews there.

But as Athena said, all this is going too fast. Just 10 years ago we had those brick phones and could only use then if the sky was clear. And today you can wash your dishes and cook your lunch with your smartphones and stuff.

But who has money to buy these stuff???? If you want such a machine (fridge or over or washing machine operated by smartphone), you right away need to have some good smartphone, but if you have smartphone you have to have some good internet connection, which again costs and one thing pulls another. Who can afford all of these things?

All this technology is good if you live in a city or larger suburb. Here in the boonies? Or out in the midwest? No coverage at all.

I don't know if I want those glasses but I'd like to be someone so important I would need them.

The security experts of Websense made a reseach regarding java-plugins on browsers. According to them 94% of the browers with activated java browsers use an old version. 75% of the people have a plugin version older than 6 month.

http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/Studie-alarmiert-Java-Plugins-sind-meist-stark-veraltet-1832161.html?view=zoom;zoom=1

The newest JRE version is 1.7.17.
Don't forget to update, otherwise your browser may be at risk of getting attacked.

You just want Athena, bitching and moaning like the rest of us when the wives ask us to "fix" it. Meaning the computer needs updating, or some other window has popped up.

My wifey doesn't even ask anymore. She just hands me her laptop and says, "Fix it." It's hilarious. She doesn't even try to figure it out herself. Oh, well. Married life, eh?

Oh Lily has quite a lot of knowledge to do that all by herself. In her hometown she used to fix all the computer for their friends. They even call her here in Germany when some things are not working.

I think everybody can do an update, I just wanted to send out a little reminder.

We don't really do any set ups on each other computers. She has her own way of handling things and the way she loves it and so do I. We are kind of a Geek House.

I generally do not love updates cause lot of my programs are bridged and one update pulls another and then I have to update some programs which I like the way they are. Sometimes updates for certain programs are not really stable and they are full of bugs.
As to when it comes to my home town, I think half of the town is running on computers that I configured, set up and sold them. Thankfully, there are programs as ''team viewer'' who allow user to connect to other computer trough Internet. That way I can monitor and fix things if needed. Unfortunately, I can not physically access the hardware.

At home I had around 4-5 computer in pieces, since I moved I couldn't brought them with me, but Athena sometimes brings me some stuff from work with which I can play and fix.
