Beta Readers

Post by BassGuitarGirl on Wed Apr 17, 2013 11:08 am

To the writers and Beta-readers out there. I have a few questions.

Writers: How many Beta readers do you typically use for a new project? Do you pay them?

Beta-readers: Do you typically get paid by a writer?

I don't pay nor have I been paid in the past. As for amount of Beta's I like to have three, but used just two on Strangers? Trust is a big factor for me, so I need to trust the person who's reading for me. I have to believe in them.

I like three Beta readers as well. I have one fabulous trusted Beta who'll tell me like it is!!! But I'm having difficulty finding others who will do more than mere grammar and punctuation checks (what is that called? Copy editing?). Some folks are loathe to criticize your work, but that's EXACTLY what we need Beta readers for. Tell us the weak, confusing, makes-no-sense parts. Tell us where you were bored or needed more description or whatever.

Yeah, I've never been paid (nor expected to be paid) when I've done Beta reading. I usually acknowledge my Betas in the Acknowledgement section and then send a signed copy of the book once it comes out in print.

Although, one Beta reader told me (not so politely) that she didn't want one. blush That knocked me down a few dozen pegs. Yikes! But I chose that particular person because she was so forward and abrupt and no-nonsense. Her comments started to get a little too personal about me and less about the writing, so, uh, yeah, she's no longer a Beta reader anymore. shook My delicate nature can't take that! vava

Exactly. Say whatever you want about my writing that's constructive, tell me something sucks, that you loved this, but hated that. But don't get personal and worse yet, don't stop reading and forget to tell me.

I had one person do that, when I tentatively mentioned that I was still waiting for her input, she was like, I hated the book, I stopped reading at chapter three. That was four months ago???
